Virtual Workshop Series • follow the light • Episode #4

Four Episodes ∙ Great cast ∙ LEARNINGS GUARANTEED

While classic optics have reached their limits, freeform optics make the physically feasible possible. Freeform optics open up completely new possibilities for manufacturers of life science products, automation solutions, and sensor technology.  fo+ [freeform optics plus] is an alliance of scientists, developers, and manufacturers offering users from high-tech areas the opportunity to learn more about the possibilities that freeform optics offer, as well as their fields of application and optical properties.

Episode #4: Optical coatings for freeform optics

The fourth episode of the virtual workshop series focuses on the topic of optical coatings for freeform optics. In any optical system, coatings contribute significantly to optimal performance. The webinar will focus on the most important requirements for coatings on freeform optical elements and how these can be met with state-of-the-art technologies.
Experts from Fraunhofer IOF and Materion Balzers Optics will present basic facts and latest experimental results.

OUR EXPERTS

[Freeform Optics Plus] at a glance

Stephanie Hesse-Ertelt from the Fraunhofer IOF manages the regional growth core fo+ as research coordinator across all partners and developments along the technology platform and presents an overview of the alliance and the results of Fraunhofer IOF.

Why Coatings make a difference & What is best for High-Reflectance?

Stefan Jakobs of Materion Balzers Optics has investigated the suitability of purely dielectric and metal-dielectric coating systems for the mirror coating of freeform optics. He presents coating processes and layer design as well as results for spectral reflectance, optical losses and laser damage threshold.

Anti-Reflection coatings and nanostructures AR-plas

Ulrike Schulz from the Fraunhofer IOF has many years of expertise in the field of plastic coating and will present various processes for antireflection coating of surfaces. Combinations of thin layers and nanostructures achieve particularly good properties on freeform surfaces.

Conformal Coatings by Atomic Layer Deposition

Adriana Szeghalmi is developing thin films using atomic layer deposition (ALD) at Fraunhofer IOF and Jena University. This process enables the uniform coating of complex-shaped optics and diffraction gratings to increase their efficiency.
